My fear in work
The fact that my present self is so sure that my future self will be happy with this job feels somewhat arrogant. It's like a mother thinking she knows everything about her child when, in reality, she doesn't
Hmm, my fear in work?
I consider myself extremely fortunate as I realized this quite early in my life.
After graduation, I immediately entered the workforce and had the opportunity to perform all the roles in the company. This was due to three of my colleagues getting pregnant, which meant I had the chance to quickly acquire and apply many skills.
It felt amazing—actually, exhilarating. I adored the environment, the responsibilities, the communication, the negotiation (or what we might call manipulation, lol), the people around me, the mostly minor and occasionally serious problems, and the fulfilling sensation when I had either solved them or helped my colleagues to do so.
But then I noticed something was missing. Right now, it feels okay. But what about one day, when I have kids or when I am "old", will I still love this job?
At that time, I was grateful for my job, so I thought to myself, "Hell yeah, it's a wonderful job." But later on, when I decided to be more honest with myself, I kept returning to this question: "Will my 40-year-old self still feel okay with this job?"
Now, I know a better answer: "I don't know."
“I don't know if my future self will enjoy this 9-5 job or not.”
The fact that my present self is so sure that my future self will be happy with this job feels somewhat arrogant. It's like a mother thinking she knows everything about her child when, in reality, she doesn't. She doesn't know her child's aspirations, deepest desires, or the countries her child wants to visit when he or she grows up—among many other things.
So, it's best that I create more choices for my future self, and hopefully, she will not be confined to a single scenario.
Life is short, so live it as you want—not as your parents, relatives, or people around you want. But remember to be kind, okay? Be the cool aunt and mother that your child will feel proud of and be inspired by.
Haha, that sounds cool, actually. It's going to be my new mantra:
"Be the cool aunt and mother that your child will feel proud of and be inspired by.”
