According to Đại Việt Sử Ký Toàn Thư - the official national chronicle of the Vietnamese that was originally compiled by the royal historian Ngô Sĩ Liên 1479. The first independent nation of Vietnam identified in "Ngọc Phả truyền thư" - Genealogy Book of the Nguyen family:
"Xích" (赤) means red which is also the name of the red star in the southern sky of "Nhị Thập Bát Tú" - the twenty-eight brightest stars.
"Quỷ" (鬼) here is not 'demon' but the combination of three words of "Vương" (王 ) which stands for "King".

Đế Minh (son of the Agriculture God - Thần Nông) when travelling to the South. He married Vụ Tiên's daugter and give birth to Kinh Dương Vương. The prince very smart and intelligent, the King very pleased and want to pass down his throne for him. However, Kinh Dương Vương doesn't want to over crown his brother Đế Nghi (one of the 5 greatest founding Kings of China).
The King then ceded his throne to Đế Nghi let the King rule the North. Then the King crowned Kinh Dương Vương, ruling the South, the nation call Xích Quỷ.
The South now has its owner!
